Cairngorms Clay Club

Learn how to make beautiful ceramics with this brilliant evening course taught by Angus Grant.

Our ever-popular course is back for 2024 and we are ready to welcome you back to the pottery. Clay Club is perfect for those starting out with pottery, as it covers a range of basic skills over a period of eight weeks.

What you will learn

Starting out with basic handbuilding skills to make pinch pots and mugs, you will move onto slab building and of course, throwing on the wheel. There will also be a chance to glaze your pots, choosing from our selection of glazes. 

All tools will provided, along with source imagery (though you are welcome to bring your images to work from).

During the course, you will produce at five pieces ring. Any additional items to be fired will be charged at £10 per piece to cover firing costs.

This course will run on Tuesday evenings, from 7-9pm, starting on April 16. The final session will be on June 4.

Programme

Our weekly programme is:

Week 1 – Introduction to handbuilding, making a mug based on a simple form.

Week 2 & 3 – Introduction to throwing and making pinch pots.

Week 4 & 5 – Developing throwing and slab building.

Week 6 – Finishing all work. All work will be fired after this week.

Week 7 – First week of glazing - using underglaze to decorate ceramics.

Week 8 – Second week of glazing – experimenting with reactive glazes
